Advantages of nuclear energy

France's 80 % of electricity is generated by 58 nuclear power plants.

  • Nuclear production of electricity is steady and consistent while wind turbines (even at their best) generate power only 22 % of the time. Solar cells do not work in bad weather or darkness. Backup systems running on fossil fuels must keep running on standby so all the advantages of reduced emission are lost.
  • Radiation leaks are small.
  • Nuclear energy is claimed to be the safest major energy resource in the world. Apart from 65 people killed in Chernobyl disaster, no member of public has been hurt in a nuclear accident. Coal, oil, gas and even hydro energy cause many times more accident while fossil-fuel pollution kills thousands every year.

    According to figures published in the US, it's more dangerous to work in real estate or finance than in nuclear business. Whatever activists might say, a modern plant is protected from aerial attacks by a thick mesh of steel and concrete, and is therefore unlikely to explode like a bomb.

  • Once up and running, energy from nuclear plant becomes cheapest. As per German Govt, average cost of nuclear power is 2.65 cents against coal 3.35, hydro 4.3, gas 4.9, wind 9 and solar 54 cents.
  • In terms of 'external costs' - effect on such things as health and environment - nuclear wins hands down. An EC report claims that if these costs were included, coal-generated electricity would double in price and gas increase by a third.
